I wrote a song, but it contains sound clips from The Hollywood Edge Sound FX CD, is it still legal for me to sell?
There are a couple of different labels I am interested in sharing my work with, but some of the songs have sound effects from The Holllywood Edge, I’m not sure about the digital rights of these sounds. If you think you may know but I haven’t given you enough information, let me know.
Thank you for your answers so far, but I realize samples like voices and other songs aren’t legal. But this is a sound fx cd, meant for films that are often indie and have no method of payment, DRM free.
Did you purchase the SFX disks? If so, then I believe you also purchased a license to use them. Look on the disk for any sort of legal notice.
If the recording studio where you made the recording owns the disks, you might also be covered. They also give away some freebies as a demo, and I think they are OK to use, but it might be best to call them up and ask.
If it turns out that you don’t have the right to use them, maybe you can negotiate for a license to use the specific samples rather than buying the whole collection. Best to take care of that stuff before you get sued…
