NEED REFERRAL FOR CHEAPER SERVICE THAN TIME WARNER FOR INTERNET?

I have been paying about $83 a month fof Road Runner high speed internet (about medium speed) along with basic digital cable for TV. I have to cut back $$$. If I drop the cable tv Time Warner will charge me about $45 a month to keep the Road Runner as I am thinking of getting rid of the cable TV to save money.l So, I thought $45 a month for Internet is too high. Is there any other company I can go to in the Hollywood L.A. area for cheaper reliable good service Internet only? Thanx

I have been using Time Warner Road Runner for years. Here’s the trick:

They do not want to lose your business. However, if they can get you to pay $83 per month for high speed Internet, they will. If you call to cancel your service, the customer service representative will ask you why. Tell them you can no longer afford the service. The rep will transfer you to a special service rep who’s job is to keep you as a customer. They won’t tell you the rep is a specialist but they are trained to keep your business and are authorized to offer discount rates.

Again, the new rep will ask you why you want to cancel your Internet. Tell them you can no longer afford it. Tell them bills are stacking up and you cannot see any way to continue.
The rep will mention they are having a “special” and can extend your service for only $29.95, $39.95, or maybe $59.95 (depending on how much they think they can get out of you). Usually, the extension is for 3 or 6 months of service. Then your rate will automatically revert back to the higher fee.

At this point, do not insist on canceling. Pretend you want to keep the service but insist you cannot afford it. They might offer a special rate again. If not, ask if there are any long-term discount rates. The rep will then tell you about another “special” rate $29.95 that you can have permanently if you agree to a 1 year contract. However, the speed of Internet service is slightly slower than the blinding-speed you have now.

I’m not sure what the numbers are, but you might be getting the 700 Mbs speed now and they will reduce that to 300 Mbs (Megabytes per second). It is the speed I have in my contract, for which I pay $29.95 every month. I have had this rate for well over 2 years now.

There is absolutely no noticeable difference in my Internet speed. 300 Mps is still very fast. I watch movies online and have never had them freeze.

Consider that a wireless G router is only 56 Mbs and a wireless N router is 100 Mps. The discounted lower speed at Road Runner is 3 times faster than an N router!

Time Warner will not tell you about this lower speed and rate until they think they might be losing you as a customer. I guess they reason it is better to get $30 per month from you than $0. With the current economy, people are cutting back everywhere. Time Warner is prepared to keep you but will not mention the discounts until they have to.

It’s all a nasty little game they play. Before I got my current service plan and discount, I would call every 3 to 6 months, pretending to cancel. They would never allow it. They always offered me a “special” that they “just happen to be running at this time”. It’s quite funny.

If you choose the lower rate, your contract will renew every year automatically. You must call to cancel or there is a penalty fee but if you plan to keep Internet service, it is a great plan. I have absolutely no complaints with my 300 Mbs service plan.
