Hollywood Magnet
Is it worth it to go to a magnet school an hour away?
I really like film. Wait, scratch that, I love film. I really want to go on to become a director someday in hollywood. In the city that I live in, there are no Performing Arts Schools. The closest one I have found (and I have been searching) is roughly an hour away. If I was accepted, I would have to wake up at 4:00 in the morning just to be on time, and probably wouldn’t make it back until about 3:30 in the evening.
I really love movies and film, but am I crazy for considering this? It doesn’t cost anything, to go to the school.
Lastly, my current school has no film classes at all. We have a TV production class, but basically, its a joke, and all they do is film the school’s news.
So what do you think I should do?
Ask a lot of questions at your performing arts school. What percentage of their students go on to college (if that’s your goal)? What schools do they get into? (Are they attending schools with good film programs? Does the magnet school really make a difference in terms of getting them in?) What kinds of things can you learn at the magnet school that you: a) can’t get at a regular high school; or b) won’t have to take anyway in college? How many courses do they offer that would really prepare you for being a film director (courses like photography, screenwriting, acting, cinematography, film editing (mostly done on computer these days)? How many of those courses would you actually be able to take every year aside from the required courses for high school graduation and/or college admission? What credentials do the teachers have? Have they sold any film scripts? Made any films? Or are they just regular teachers who, like you, enjoy watching movies?
Academics aside, how do you feel about having your classmates drawn from a wide area and not being able to get together with them easily to socialize, make films together, etc.? How do you feel about going to school with the drama queens and slackers who go to a performing arts school because they think it’s easier than a regular school or because they have stars in their eyes and just want to hang out with celebs in Hollywood someday? Will public transportation be available to the magnet school or will your parents have to get you there every day? (Trust me, that’s a BIG commitment of time for them — four hours a day round trip to get you to and from school.) If public transportation isn’t available — if the school buses don’t run, if traffic is snarled by a snowstorm — do you have a guaranteed way to get home from school? Do your parents have more than one vehicle available so that you can get back and forth if one is in the shop or damaged in an accident? Are carpools from your area a possibility? It sounds like a lot to consider but you don’t want your education to be a huge inconvenience to your family. If it becomes too much of a burden, they may decide to switch you back to your local school part way through high school, which would be much harder to deal with than just starting there in the first place. Ask a lot of questions before you make your decision.
