What fun! This soundtrack of the film adaptation of the Broadway musical overflows with glossy, ol’ fashioned ’60s-style pep. It won’t win any awards for innovation, but it may well be one of the most feel-good releases of the year. While not quite as super-energetic as the original Broadway cast, the new crew ain’t too shabby: Nikki Blonsky delivers as Tracy Turnblad and Zac Efron (High School Mu…

“America’s First Tribal Love-Rock Musical,” went the advertising, and nobody could argue with that. Hair opened on Broadway in 1968 and immediately became a smash, although no one could quite discern what it was about. Something like, “War is bad, drugs are good, racism bites the big one, and nudity is nice.” Although all these sentiments are expressed on this album which, like the show, has not d…

The cast recording for the Broadway musical of John Waters’s 1988 paean to dance, music, big beautiful women, and integration is a sheer delight. It’s wonderfully upbeat all the way through, with a classic feel that’s in keeping with the story’s setting in the early 1960s. The characters come alive in these songs, from Marissa Jaret Winokur’s (Tracy Turnblad) opening lines in “Good Morning Baltim…

Songs include “Aquarius,” “Hair,” “Easy to Be Hard,” and…

John Waters made his bid for PG respectability with this enjoyably trashy comedy about the racial integration of a teen dance show on Baltimore television in the early ’60s. Waters, as always, makes a virtue of junk culture and the powerful emotional forces it can represent as kids vie to get on the show. Meanwhile, a parade of former stars (Pia Zadora, Debbie Harry, Sonny Bono) and pseudostars (D…

Here’s a Broadway musical about a young man who sets out to discover true meaning in his life, dabbling in war, sex, and politics before finding love. That may sound conventional, but it isn’t. The title character of Pippin is the son of Charlemagne, the 9th-century emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, and when Bob Fosse directed the original Broadway production in 1972, he transformed what had begun…
