Mamma Mia! – 3 stars (good)

Every once in a while comes a movie that is not designed to act with great singing, directing and writing, but is be just what is simply fun! The most recent of these rare films is "Mamma Mia!" Released in 2008.

Based on the hit same name of Abba, Mamma Mia! first opened as a musical at the Prince Edward Theatre in London in 1999. The original Broadway production opened in 2001 at the Winter Garden Theatre in New York, and has a duration of more than 3,100 performances through April of this year. Now it has toured over 140 cities United States.

Mamma Mia! was nominated for Best Musical and Best Musical Score at the 2002 Tony Awards. The director of the original Broadway, Phyllida Lloyd, is also the director of the film. The music book and script are both by Catherine Johnson.

According to Variety, producer Judy Craymer and writer Catherine Johnson "broke when I first tried to put the show together… And now are two of the richest women in England."

This would because Mamma Mia! establish a new mark for the biggest weekend opening ever for a musical – $ 27 + million dollars. He also became in the highest grossing film of all time in the United Kingdom, and would become the highest grossing worldwide film musical, generating $ 610 + million with a production budget of $ 52 million.

Combine the film and theater productions of Mamma Mia! has raised more of $ 2 billion in revenue since it opened in 1999. Much of the success has to do with Abba, the Swedish pop / dance group that became one of the attractions popular entertainment worldwide since 1972-1982. If you do not recognize Abba, should recognize their music.

Mamma Mia! is a treasure trove of music Abba composed by Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus, including "Dancing Queen, Super Trouper, Knowing Me, Knowing You", "Take A Chance On Me, "" Thanks for the music, "" Money, Money, Money ", winner takes all" and "I Have a Dream."

Mamma Mia! takes place on a Greek island, where the never married Donna (Meryl Streep) runs a hotel not too successful with his daughter Sophie (Amanda Seyfried), who is about to marry Sky (Dominic Cooper). Donna invites her two best friends to the wedding, Rosie (Julie Walters) and Tanya (Christine Baranski), the three of them formed a trio stage at the same time.

Sophie, who has never known who her father (his mother does not know well), finds her mother's diary for 20 years and finds his was intimate mother of three young at that time, Sam Carmichael (Pierce Brosnan), Harry Bright (Colin Firth) and Bill Anderson (Stellan Skarsgard), one of them is her father. Without know that one, which invites all three to her wedding and her mother has a seizure. See the movie of how it all works out.

Despite winning the Golden Globe nominations Best Film and Best Actress (Meryl Streep, who else could it be?), Mamma Mia! took a large number of visitors in time for review, no less important which was "this must be the only musical in film history consists almost entirely of people who can not sing." It is true that the film does not benefit having the cast perform their own musical numbers.

Mamma Mia! did not win any major prize worth talking about, but the excellence of the music Abba and the fun atmosphere of the presentation can not be denied, so I gave it a 3-star (good) rating instead of two stars (average) rating.

I prefer not to hear Pierce Brosnan sing again. You can say anything you want about Meryl Streep, but remember this: She has been nominated as Best Actress or Best Supporting Actress for 14 Academy Awards and won two Oscars, and she has also been nominated for 21 Golden Globe Awards and won five times, more than any other actor in the history of any awards.

Do not resist, if you want some fun entertainment, see Mamma Mia!
