The Real Book Jazz false Storybook
In short, a book of "false" is a book of sheet lead. Lead sheets are a basic skeleton a musical melody with the melody and the chords and lyrics (if applicable). The musicians called it a fake book to be "false", a melody as if they really knew the music and practiced before.
Already in the early days, mostly musicians earned their money from a tip jar. People would request songs, and if the musicians could play, have a point. If the musicians would be able to play applications especially if the request was more song sentimental in nature, the tips of the night were larger than the clientele became more and more sauces. If the band could not play a song people request begin complaints about how the bar should not hire these musicians and, consequently, if not too many complaints to the waiter, then the band are not hired again.
So if you have a couple of false books and can read sheets of lead are more likely to fill requests from the audience and are hired again. Some musicians entrepreneurs who buy books piano-vocal, which was the only way to get music then, and cut the line of the melody, chords and lyrics and paste them on one page often taking a scale of 5 pages and is compressed to one page. So if you had a book of 500 or less than most requested songs, you will be better able to fill requests from the audience. Then other musicians were asked if they could buy a copy of the items collected and the people who copy and sell your book so they could get for her. This was a violation of copyright laws, because they are not paid royalties to composers.
These days, publishers have created their own fake books for specific styles such as Jazz, Rock, R & B, Latin and Broadway tunes. As early as 1960 or so students from Berklee College of Music began compiling the book "Real" which was a mixture of modern jazz and standards. As time grew to three volumes, but the first version was the most popular among jazz players. Sher went publications with their "correct" version of the Real Book. Now publishers like Hal Leonard, Warner Brothers and Columbia came out with fake books with permits and legal fees paid the composers.
Back in the day, the musicians would be willing to buy the fake books in the trunk of a car in an alley somewhere or enter a music store and ask for our special book for sale. Then you would give $ 35 and get your book Real unlawful. Many music stores became taken to court for selling them.
