Broadway Secrets

What exactly is a ballad?

I’m attending a summer program and I need to bring sheet music for a ballad from a broadway musical. I’m still really confused about what exactly a ballad is, so if anyone could provide an example from broadway, or even a suggestion, i’d really really appreciate it.

My range is a confusing thing. I tend to be able to sing low very very well (think Sabbath Prayer from FotR) but I can also hit some high notes (I can hit most notes in No Good Deed from Wicked) I’m really really comfortable with songs like If I Had a Fine White Horse from the secret garden & over time I’ve become comfortable singing the part of the Bakers Wife from into the woods. So basically, if you’re offering a suggestion, anything within those sorts of ranges.

thank you!

A ballad is a song that tells a story.
They can vary and be sung or performed as prose / spoken.

Check out some of Gordon Lightfoot’s music. He has several ballads in his collection.
