Broadway Paper
Do most new musical theater (Broadway) are copyrighted products of costumes, choreography or staging?
I am writing a college paper on how digital technology has affected the musical theater and opera, and I think the illegal video recordings that have been published in various video-sharing websites are probably giving managers an appeal everywhere easy to copy the originals. Please include any websites if possible.
All designs are copyrighted. And the theater [Unions AEA, AGMA, IATSE, AFM] are all actively seeking to make illegal clips removed from YouTube. However, images designs are available when you open a show, and souvenir programs or when the script is published commercially with pictures in it. So an unscrupulous producer could use to copy some of the design elements. [By the way, whenever you see a small theater and a famous work by just copying and adapt the original artwork for their Broadway posters and brochures, which are breaking the law.] And of course there are the plays that have appeared in the video commercial purposes. Several years ago when I did my first production of "Sweeney Todd" director idiot copied about 95% of the original staging Hal Prince from the DVD [Angela Lansbury /] George Hearn. Several of us with ethics lodged a complaint with the producer, and tried unsuccessfully to change the director work. Terrible.
