Broadway Lights

Random light on the stage after a Broadway show?
After the theater is cleared at the end of a Broadway show, there's always a light on a pole that is placed on the center of the stage. I have scene many times and this is an example of that light, http://community.post-gazette.com/cfs-filesystemfile.ashx/__key/CommunityServer.Components.UserFiles/00.00.00.26.32/talkback.jpg It's driving me crazy, anyone have any idea what the light?
It's called Spirit of Light. Its main objective is to illuminate the scene for safety while theater is dark, but the light of being on a pole is above all the tradition. The theater "ghosts of the past shows" will not become restless and mischievous in the presence ghost light. Or something like that – I do tech theater, but do not pay much attention to the superstitious part of it. Here's a wiki entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghost_light_ (Theater) More is to prevent people walking off stage in the orchestra pit.
