Okay, so the theme song of this 1977 show, “Tomorrow,” hasn’t improved in 21 years or become more endurable, but nobody ever sang it better or meant it more than Andrea McCardle, the original heroine of this musical based on the Depression-era comic strip. Although Annie’s an orphan, there’s nothing much depressing about the rest of this Charles Strouse score with lyrics by Martin Charnin. Even “W…

Disney’s 1999 TV production of the classic 1977 musical Annie is remarkable for its casting of stage actors rather than ratings trump cards. Tony winners Audra McDonald (Grace), Alan Cumming (Rooster), and Kristin Chenoweth (Lily) join four-time nominee Victor Garber (Daddy Warbucks) and Les Misérables veteran Alicia Morton (Annie) to tell the tale of the Depression-era orphan who gets a taste of…

Charmless and dull, this adaptation of the Broadway hit stars Aileen Quinn as the depression-era moppet, Albert Finney as Daddy Warbucks, Carol Burnett as the cruel headmistress at an orphanage, and Tim Curry as a villain. The film never gets its legs, and there is no sense of setting; it’s almost as if the whole thing is happening in a void. John Huston nominally directed–no doubt to make money …
